A Labor Theory of
Artistic Value
a collaboration with artist and film-maker Mary Jirmanus Saba
Exploring the intersections between gendered reproductive labour that keeps the cultural space in motion, and the reproductive labour of motherhood, this collaborative performance combines video projection, a delivered text, and a performative act of cultural maintenance. This piece is written to be performed by a cultural worker, staff at the exhibiting organisation. This iteration of the performance will be performed by SAVVY member Raisa Galofre, herself a mother.*

My family accompanied me on the day of the performance. My daughter wanted to be with me. I welcomed her, carried her, breastfed her and together we delivered Mary’s piece. The 20’ somthing minutes script, turned to be around 45’. I let myself go with our own rhythm, of the rhythm of an artist mother who is performing artistic labor with her child. The audience was patience and understanding, they were most of all, I would say curious and interested in witnessing how those ways of being and laboring go together.
